Ronald Crane reports from Grosvenor Park.
For well over an hour, this match was as dull as dull can be. Both sides were stodgy and laboured. Quality was in short supply all over the difficult playing surface. A strong and chilly wind did not assist matters. Lane Head showed the signs of being in a difficult patch, having parted company with their manager the day before. Knowle were, perhaps, too anxious and trying just too hard. Passing moves through mid-field were jettisoned in favour of the long ball into the channels. Lane Head found coping with this tactic easy. The result was only two shots on target during the whole of the first forty-five minutes, and both in Knowle’s favour.
The wind was cold, and the afternoon seemed to be dragging on for ever. Thank God for the wonderful and warm welcome one receives at this football club. They may not have the riches of some, but what they have they share. From Chairman and Secretary, to the ladies in the kitchen, we were royally welcomed. They are a credit to the league. On the park, it was a different matter, four bookings and one in the sin-bin. Referee Richards had his work cut out.
With ten minutes of the second half gone, it all changed. A simple long ball over the top was chipped first time by BRANDON HAGUE into the net from thirty yards. Suddenly it was a different game. The Robins’ tails were up and Lane Head dejected. Following a Knowle corner, the ball was headed straight at the Goalkeeper, only for him to send the ball up field. Eventually it came to NATHAN CORRY who made no mistake from twelve yards.
With fifteen minutes to go TOM CULLEN profited from a wonderful move along Knowle’s right flank by Corry. The same man again fed CULLEN for his second. Four minutes from the end, it was the long ball again. This led to a defensive mix-up for ZAK PARSONS to bundle the ball over the line, and make it five.
Not the best game of football I have ever watched, but Knowle will not give a fig about that. They left Grosvenor Park with three precious points, which sets them up for next Saturday’s encounter at Hampton Road with Coton Green.
