Jones & Corry Just Enough to Sink Sutton

22nd October 2022 - Knowle FC 2-0 Sutton Rangers

Ronald Crane reports from The Draintech

It was an unusual Robins that took the Park for this cup fixture against Sutton Rangers of MFL Division Three. Injuries and unavailability reduced Clive and Matthew Seeley’s options. Yet they were enough to ease past the visitors.  Ben Jones, Ash Weeks and Jacob Walton all started with new signings Lewis Gordon and Ramarlo Barrett on the Bench.

The opening exchanges were fairly even, but as the match progressed The Robins began to assert their authority. The Robins set up with Ash Weeks controlling everything in that vital position just ahead of the defenders. He fulfilled his task with aplomb.  Ben Jones, enjoying his start benefited from really good work on the left. When the ball came to him, he still had much to do on the edge of the Penalty Area. He made space for himself and hit the net from eighteen yards. It was no more than the home side deserved.

With the Robins in control, they sent over nineteen crosses during the course of the match. Many were excellent but missed; for others there was a dearth of Robins in the area, still more were inaccurate.  One expected the visitors to change tactics for the second period, but they didn’t. To their credit, they tried to play football, but the opposition was just too good.

Seven minutes after the re-start Nathan Corry took charge following a real old-fashioned goal-mouth scramble. The forward not only sorted it out but picked his spot to score and double the lead.  On the hour mark, Knowle withdrew Ash Weeks, it resulted in the visitors coming into the game, yet without any real threat. Without Weeks, the Robins lost their shape, and struggled to get forward. No matter, they had done enough to make it into the Second Round.
