Ronald Crane reports from The Draintech Community Ground
Knowle have done work on the pitch at Hampton Road, so it was much improved for this match. The Robins did just enough to take all three points in a match that was - well disappointing. Neither side shone, with Boldmere offering little up front, while The Robins continued to squander chances.
Although on top for the whole match, Knowle found it difficult to pierce the spirited defence put up by the visitors. Although concentrating on keeping The Robins at bay, it was a surprise that the visitors withdrew their two most creative players in Max Turner and Kasen Peace.
This match was short on quality. There was none of the intensity and quality shown at Kenilworth last Saturday. Turgid is the word that comes to mind.
Nonetheless, the result was far more important than the performance. Successful sides know how to gain points ugly as well as with beauty.
It took the best part of half an hour for Knowle to get the ball into the net. A great pass to OWEN WARD allowed the diminutive mid-fielder to score via the post from eighteen yards. There were other chances, Dylon Bennet shaved the bar from distance, and a good move by Walton to Mullen whose trap, turn and shot deserved better than the save from Denton in the visitor’s goal.
The second half was no better and even got worse when Dylon Bennett’s Penalty Shot was easy for the ‘Goalkeeper to save. Reece Hewitt had a chance, but his touch was too week to cause real damage. With twenty minutes to go, Dylon Bennett won the ball wide on the right passed on to George Seeley, who in turn fed REECE HEWITT to double the score. It was enough, although George Seeley’s powerful shot needed to be paired for a Corner and the same player blasted over when presented with an opportunity.
The three points put Knowle in second place to Sutton United in the Division Two Table, on goal difference. However, the tough matches come thick and fast in this Division where the sides in the top half would not disgrace themselves in Division One. Next Saturday being a case in point. Where The Robins are away at AFC Coventry Rangers, themselves in a close third spot.
