Ronald Crane reports from the Boldmere Sports & Social, Sutton Coldfield
A real tense match, played, in the first half at least, with a biting cold wind. There was much at stake for both sides. Boldmere fighting to avoid relegation; Knowle keeping pressure on second placed Coton Green. In the end they cancelled each other out.
Boldmere worked extremely hard for their point, and maybe Knowle work just too hard. Certainly, the visitors were tense and nervous. A rock-hard pitch was not conducive to following football, Knowle never got their passing game going. Relying on the long ball, often itself over hit, they got no joy from a determined and staunch home defence. In the first half, The Robins had most possession, yet the home side were the most dangerous. Both teams squandered chances, consequently there were just four – yes 4 – chances on target in the whole ninety minutes, and all fell to Knowle.
As we drank our tea and half time, the talk was all that Knowle could not be as bad in the second period. It was true, they weren’t! Yet could only manage one short on target. Chances were missed from inside the six-yard box. No goals: a poor return from the eleven times they outflanked their opponents, and the ten cross they sent over in the second half. For Knowle it was all too rushed. Shots snatched, passes inaccurate, and in the first half at least, open criticism of each other: all gave the home side confidence.
This was a disappointing performance by the Robins. They will have to do much better next Saturday at Barnt Green Spartak and hope Coton Green lose at Coventry Alvis.
